The Drew University field hockey team went 0-2 in their most recent week of play. The Rangers’ season record now stands at 1-6 as they enter conference play on Sept. 22.
On Sept. 15, Drew was edged by Delaware Valley University with a score of 2-1. The Rangers controlled possession early in the opening half and scored the first goal of the game, when Carly Schiller (’22) tipped a deflection from Mackenzie Hascup’s (’20) rip from the top of the circle. This was Schiller’s first collegiate goal and the second goal of the season for the Rangers. At the end of the first period, Delaware Valley equalized the play with a goal off a corner. With under 15 minutes of play remaining, Del Val finished the scoring with the game winning goal to secure their victory. Ryann Callaghan (’19) made two stops in goal, including a saved penalty shot. Delaware Valley finished with advantages in shots with a 9-3 margin and penalty corners with a 6-5 margin.
On Sept. 19, the Rangers took the field against cross-town rival FDU-Florham and fell with a score of 2-0. During the first half of the game, FDU fired 16 shots and gained an early 1-0 lead after only five minutes of play. In the 45 minute, FDU secured their win with a goal off a penalty corner. Callaghan recorded six saves while facing a 21 shot attack. Midfielder Sami Strathern (’20) went end to end to help set up scoring opportunities for the Rangers as well as breaking up several potential breakaways to slow the Devil’s offense. The defensive line made up of Hascup, Schiller, and Kate Todero (’19) cut off several potential scoring plays for the Devils. FDU finished with a total of 21 shots and 14 penalty corners while Drew had three shots and five penalty corners.
The Rangers continue their season when they host Goucher College this Saturday at 1 p.m. in their Landmark Conference opener.
