After winning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week in her first two weeks of collegiate competition, women’s golf’s Cathy Bi (‘22) knows what it takes to win. But her road to Drew has been like any other.
Bi was born in Beijing, China and moved to the United States when she was 14. She studied at the Wardlaw Heritage School in Edison, N.J. and moved back to China du
ring the summer. Not only has she studied in New Jersey, but she has also studied in the United Kingdom and Ojai, California.
In Bi’s first collegiate event, she finished in the top third of the tournament, but it was her second overall event and her first Landmark Conference tournament that turned heads. Bi won the tournament, placing first out of 40 and helped secure hosting the Landmark Conference tournament at home in Morristown this spring.
“I’ve been playing golf since I was five, and I knew that golf [would] always be a hobby
of mine,” Bi said. “I haven’t trained for a long time but I have the muscle memory of a
player and I’m able to play stably. I will need more training and practice to be on top of my game, and I’m excited for the spring season.”
Bi said of Drew’s golf program, “It’s an individual sport, but the spirit and unity of the team plays a big part on individual performances as well. And I have amazing teammates who deserve it as much as I do.”
Bi’s success was not formed overnight. She has spent an innumerable amount of hours practicing and perfecting her craft.
She learned only from the best. “My mom and I used to wake up at five a.m. to watch Tiger [Woods] play. I never had an official trainer and my mom has been a role model of mine and my coach. Even until now, I go to her for all my questions about golf. She plays with integrity, grace, and, most importantly, she plays with a fun and positive mentality.”
While the next season doesn’t start again until the spring semester, Bi plans on many more successes next season. As for her intentions off the green, she is an undecided major, but is taking courses in Philosophy, Business and Civic Engagement.
