On Oct. 27, the Drew University women’s soccer team faced a 1-0 Landmark Conference setback against Susquehanna University in their season finale. The Rangers closed their season with a 0-5-2 record in the conference and a 6-9-3 run overall.
The first half was held equal at zero with neither team finding success in striking the back of the net; the two teams combined for only seven shots in a very defensive period of play. In the second half, however, Susquehanna outshot the Rangers with a ratio of 10-4. Goalie Brielle Castanheira (’19) ended her time as a Ranger with six saves, her career high, including a series of back to back stops in the 65 minute. Less than a minute later, the River Hawks broke through to claim the game.
Susquehanna finished with a 13-8 shot advantage and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Alex Gilgorri (’19) led the Rangers with five shots. Castanheira and Gilgorri were among the five Drew seniors who finished their collegiate careers. Alexis Castanheira (‘19), Kayla Fleming (‘19) and Caroline Kelly (‘19) also made their final appearances at Ranger Stadium.
Next fall the Rangers look to build around the twelve sophomores and four juniors on the roster. Catch Sarah Racine ('21) the returning team leading goal scorer and her teammates back in action at Ranger Stadium in the fall of 2019.
