Ranger’s Baseball made its season debut behind first-year head coach John Fugget in a road game against Kean University on Friday, Feb. 15. Drew never held a lead in the 6-4 loss to the Cougars, despite breaking the score even in the second, fifth and eighth innings. However, Kean batted in two runs in the eighth to hand the Rangers their first loss of the season.
Mike Pettigrew (‘19) led Drew, going two for three at the plate with an RBI-triple in the second inning and a run scored on fielder’s choice in the top of the eighth. Bryan Reagle (‘20) hit two for five with an RBI-single in the third inning. Pitching in relief, Joshua Williams (‘19) allowed one run off of four hits in his three innings on the mound.
Drew had no time to sulk, as they traveled back to Kean on Saturday, Feb. 16 to face Alvernia University. The Rangers fell behind 4-0 to the Golden Wolves, before they racked up nine runs over the course of the fourth and fifth innings. Alvernia proved to be unable to match the firepower of the Ranger’s bats as Drew went on to earn its first win of the season with a final score of 10-7.
Transfer Jon Cocchio (‘20) had an outstanding performance in his first appearance in the blue and green. Cocchio went two for three with three runs and three RBIs. One of his recorded hits was a three-run homer, which he smashed in the fourth inning. Zach Lipshitz (‘19), a top performer for the Rangers last season, scored two runs as he finished two for five in his at-bats. Grant Purpura (‘22) marked his first career win as a Ranger, pitching four innings of relief as starter Jeff Serin (‘20) was limited by an early season pitch count.
Next up for Drew Baseball is its home opener against William Paterson on Wednesday, Feb. 27, after their matchup against the Stevens Institute of Technology was postponed on Wednesday, Feb. 20 due to snow.
