The Drew University men’s lacrosse team dropped their season opener against Gwynedd Mercy University with a score of 9-7.
The Rangers equalized the game twice in the first half with goals from Kyle MacDonnell (’20) and Thomas Ensmenger (’19). With just over a minute remaining in the third quarter, Drew trailed 7-3 before Kevin Goettlich (’20) kicked off a 4-1 run for the Rangers with two goals. Nicholas Polacek (’20) added another to bring the score within one, but Gwynedd Mercy responded with an insurance tally. Drew was led by Goettlich, who totaled two goals and two assists, Macdonnell, who contributed two goals and one assist and goalie Nate Sanders (’20), who collected 16 saves, just one shy of his career-high.
Gwynedd Mercy finished with a 47-21 advantage in shots, a 34-19 edge in ground balls and a 14-6 leverage in face-offs.
The Rangers will face Vassar College in their home-opener on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 12 p.m. in Ranger Stadium.
