Women's Fencing Takes Off at the Long Island University Invitational

The Drew University women’s fencing team opened their 2019-2020 season with a 4-2 run at the Long Island University Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 27. 

 

The Rangers’ success included victories against Division I rivals Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner College and Long Island University, with scores of 17-10, 16-11 and 19-8 respectively. Drew also defeated Division III Hunter College by a 24-3 margin. Their only losses of the day were to NJIT with a score of 19-8 and Wellesley College with a score of 21-6.

Captain Emily Huber (’21) led the Rangers with an 8-1 record in saber. Saber mates Kayla Ogden (’21) and Candace Zola (’23) each finished 8-6 while Olivia Yepez (’22) finished 3-2. Leading the foil crew was Lydia Segal (’20) who registered an 8-5 record for the day. Grace McCarthy (’22) went 11-5 to lead in epee. Registering her first collegiate wins, Sophia McGee (’23) scored key epee victories against FDU and Wagner. Ashley Abreu (’23) and Emma Downer (’23) each contributed their first collegiate triumphs on the foil squad. 

 

The Rangers will continue their season on Sunday, Nov. 10 when they travel to the Vassar Invitational. The men’s team will also compete in the invitational to kick off their season.
